I frequently use ingredients like salt, turmeric, and ginger to cure cough and cold naturally for my entire family including my 9 year old twins.

These ayurvedic remedy for cough have been passed down by generations of south Asian moms and they have been fail proof.

I have used these natural remedies for common cough and cold so often that now my 9 year kids also remind me to use one of these remedies when they are feeling cough or congestion.

Salt and Turmeric Water Gargle:

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Water
  • 0.5 Tsp Salt
  • 0.5 Tsp Turmeric
  • 0.5 Tsp Ghee (Clarified Butter)

Preparation:

  • Warm up a cup full of water.
  • Add rest of the ingredients and mix well.
  • Gargle with this water with your chin up and mouth open, so that water can touch deep throat.

This will immediately help with coughing and congested chest.

If you do not have Ghee, do not worry. You can skip that. However it helps to sooth the throat.

You can find both Turmeric and Ghee in Indian grocery store.

I have also put links for both at the end of the post if you wish to purchase from Amazon.

This will help release mucus from nose , throat and lungs.

If you find the mixture too spicy to your taste, add some water and/or honey to suit your taste.

  • Peppermint Oil

Preparation:

  • Mix all of the above essential oils in equal parts and fill it in air tight bottle.
  • Apply a small amount, a drop or two, at the bottom of the foot and massage it gently.
  • This oil can be applied on the cloths or on the pillow while child is sleeping.
